Roma is a vibrant centre of Southwest Queensland situated approximately 500km west of Brisbane, at the intersection of the Warrego Highway and the Great Inland Way, which is now the shortest and fastest route between Cairns and Melbourne.

Servicing the Rural and Oil and Gas Industries, it is a major State public sector centre and an increasingly popular tourist destination.

The town of Roma is situated on a bend of Bungil Creek and is approximately 300m above sea level. The local Authority of Roma encompasses the entire town of Roma and has a total land area of 78 square kilometres.

The people of Roma have access to a full range of facilities and services in a community that has developed since the mid 1800's as the centre for the rapidly expanding pastoral industries as they progressed from the eastern seaboard.

Things to See and Do in Roma

Big Rig / Visitor Information Centre
This $7 million living memorial to the pioneers of Australia's oil & gas exploration industry is a must see for all who visit Roma. You'll experience the development of the industry from the nation's first discovery of petroleum in Roma in 1900 through a series of 12 interpretative panels, audio and other visual presentations and fully restored historic rigs and equipment. There is a 30-minute show using current technology and multi-media to tell the story of the early life in the oil and gas industry in Australia. A brochure is available at the Visitor Information Centre open 9am to 5pm daily. Located at Riggers Road (Warrego Highway)
Bottle Tree Bush Tours Co
Interesting tour of the Tourist Attractions within the Town of Roma. Bookings at the 'Big Rig' Oil and Gas Tourism Centre, through local motels, the Club Hotel Motel or direct to Bottle Tree Bush Tours Co. on 07 4622 1525. Town tours depart from the 'Big Rig' on Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun, departing at 2pm and returning at 4.30pm
Cemetery
Discover Roma's past - the oldest headstone to be found in the Roma cemetery dates back to 1875. Most headstones are made from local sandstone, dating back more than 100 years. The official town burial records commenced in 1881, and are located at the Roma Town Council. Located - Tiffin St
Central Business District
Home to buildings dating back to WWI. A disastrous series of fires between the turn of the century and 1939 destroyed almost all the timber buildings in the McDowall St business area. The town council insisted that replacement buildings should be of concrete or brick. Located - McDowall St
Clay Mural
The 17 elements of the large 18 square metre Bi Centennial mural are interpreted by means of an audio and moving light presentation. Created by local artists John & Maureen Morrison. Located - in the Cultural Centre
Courthouse
The Roma Courthouse, opened in 1901, was recently fully restored. The heritage listed building replaced the original timber structure, which was the venue of the infamous trial of Harry Redford who was tried for duffing 1,000 head of cattle and one white bull. Redford, alias "Captain Starlight", the lead character in the novel "Robbery Under Arms". Located - Corner Queen & McDowall St.
Duck Pond
On the Roma side of the Information Centre near the Slab Hut. See some of the most photographed and friendly ducks (wild & domestic) in the west. An ideal picnic spot with BBQ facilities (but not for the ducks!)
Grafton Terrace Scenic Drive
Featuring the Naturally occurring Grass Tree Forest. This is a dry weather drive on gravel and bitumen road. The drive is suitable for standard cars as well as 4X4 drivers.
Hero's Avenue
Honours the local 90 plus men who died in WWI. Planting began in 1918 with each tree now displaying its own remembrance plaque. Heroes' Avenue extends from front of Roma's Railway Station in Station St along Wyndham St, then into Bungil St, ending at the Cenotaph. A detailed map is available from the Information Centre.
Hospital Hill
In 1900, during the drilling of an artesian water bore, natural gas was discovered for the first time in Australia. It was then realised that oil was often associated with natural gas, so a local company drilled for oil in 1908. This well also intercepted the gas, and an accidental fire resulted, completely destroying the oilrig and drilling equipment. Between 1915 and 1929 several oil wells were drilled on Hospital Hill. This self-guided 2km walk follows a trail of 12 informative plaques. A brochure is available from the Information Centre. Located - Corner Bowen St & Whip St
Largest Bottle Tree
The Roma Town Council transplanted Roma's largest bottle tree to its present position in 1927 from a local property. The tree itself was fairly well grown at the time of the transplant and quite possibly originated in the 19th century. It has a girth of 8.9m or over 29 feet. Located - end Edwardes St off McDowall St
Mt Abundance Homestead & MeadowBank Museum
These properties are situated 8 and 12 kms from Roma respectively. Discover Roma's first settlement. A heritage listed homestead built in 1860, with a double storey hay loft built in 1859, olden day memorabilia, with on farm camping at Meadow Bank Museum. Meadowbank Museum Ph (07) 46223836 or Mt Abundance Homestead Ph (07) 4622 3183. Open by appointment only, please call before leaving Roma. Located - Warrego Highway, 12 km west of Roma
Old Lenroy Slab Hut
Built in 1893, near Hodgson, this well constructed and preserved slab hut was completely hand built from local cypress to house a family of 12. Whilst the verandah has been replaced, the basic structure is as it was built more than 100 years ago. This well-preserved cottage was moved to its present site in 1991. Located - opposite the Big Rig
Roma Bungil Cultural Centre
A modern complex, which includes a large auditorium, arts/crafts area, town library and administration offices of the Roma Town Council. Located - Corner Bungil & Quintin St Roma
Bungil Sale Yards
Roma is known as "Store Cattle Capital" being the largest store cattle-selling centre in Australia. Cattle movement of 200,000 head yearly, grossing nearly $80m. Store (unfattened) Cattle Sales are held every Tuesday from 9am and Prime Cattle sales every Thursday from 8am. Tourists are welcome to attend sales or inspect the facilities at any time. Located - Warrego Highway 2km east of the Big Rig
Roma Cinema
Situated in Hawthorne St, the cinema is a plush, modern complex seating more than 150 people, a wide screen and top sound system for the screening of the latest released films. Located - Hawthorne St
Romavilla Winery
Considered to be one of the oldest buildings in Roma and the oldest winery in the state, the Romavilla Winery was built in 1878 from local cypress. You can sample and buy the award winning wines at the winery, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 12noon and 2pm to 4pm. Phone David & Joy Wall (07) 4622 1822. Located - Northern Road
Steam Train Locomotive
The "Red Robin" is a narrow gauge coal fired steam locomotive capable of hauling 80 adults. Take a tour of China Town, a Sub-artesian bore, and the perimeter of the Big Rig, crossing over a World War 2 Bailey Bridge, which was designed to carry great loads without supporting piers. Located - next to the Big Rig Night Show
Tree of Knowledge
Planted at the Post Office on the 20th September 1918, The Tree is some 6.7m in circumference (not the largest in Roma). The tree was named from more leisurely days when it was common to see locals seated around the tree, solving the world's problems in general. The tree died in 1999 and was replaced with another Bottle Tree in July 2000. Located - Cnr McDowall and Wyndham Sts
Wall of Fame
This indoor sports complex caters well for the sports enthusiast and assures that the Roma district continues its reputation for producing superior sportspeople. The Wall of Fame displays photographs of locals, Darren Thrupp - Paralympian, Richard Dean - Clay Target Shooting and Darren Lockyer - Rugby League, and more, all of whom have represented Australia in various sporting activities. Located - Cnr George & Arthur Sts
Windows of St Paul's Anglican Church
Forty-three leadlight and stained glass windows dating back to 1876 may be seen at St Paul's Anglican Church. This impressive display is open for viewing every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9am to 10am. Located - Corner Bungil and Arthur Sts.
