Roma is a vibrant centre of Southwest Queensland situated approximately 500km west of Brisbane, at the intersection of the Warrego Highway and the Great Inland Way, which is now the shortest and fastest route between Cairns and Melbourne.
Servicing the Rural and Oil and Gas Industries, it is a major State public sector centre and an increasingly popular tourist destination.
The town of Roma is situated on a bend of Bungil Creek and is approximately 300m above sea level. The local Authority of Roma encompasses the entire town of Roma and has a total land area of 78 square kilometres.
The people of Roma have access to a full range of facilities and services in a community that has developed since the mid 1800's as the centre for the rapidly expanding pastoral industries as they progressed from the eastern seaboard.

more than 100 years. The official town burial records commenced in 1881, and
are located at the Roma Town Council. Located - Tiffin St
Central Business District
Home to buildings dating back to WWI. A disastrous series of fires between the
turn of the century and 1939 destroyed almost all the timber buildings in the
McDowall St business area. The town council insisted that replacement buildings
should be of concrete or brick. Located - McDowall St
Clay Mural

Courthouse
The Roma Courthouse, opened in 1901, was recently fully restored. The heritage

of the infamous trial of Harry Redford who was tried for duffing 1,000 head
of cattle and one white bull. Redford, alias "Captain Starlight", the lead character
in the novel "Robbery Under Arms". Located - Corner Queen & McDowall St.

front of Roma's Railway Station in Station St along Wyndham St, then into Bungil
St, ending at the Cenotaph. A detailed map is available from the Information
Centre.
Hospital Hill
In 1900, during the drilling of an artesian water bore, natural gas was discovered
for the first time in Australia. It was then realised that oil was often associated
with natural gas, so a local company drilled for oil in 1908. This well also
intercepted the gas, and an accidental fire resulted, completely destroying
the oilrig and drilling equipment. Between 1915 and 1929 several oil wells were
drilled on Hospital Hill. This self-guided 2km walk follows a trail of 12 informative
plaques. A brochure is available from the Information Centre. Located - Corner
Bowen St & Whip St
Largest Bottle Tree
The Roma Town Council transplanted Roma's largest bottle tree to its present
position in 1927 from a local property. The tree itself was fairly well grown
